Trump is getting what he deserves at last. The President’s arrogance has been the cornerstone of his destruction.
US attorneys of D.C. have filed lawsuits against President Trump for violation of his constitutional oaths. The attorneys claim Trump “has violated anticorruption clauses in the Constitution by accepting millions in payments and benefits from foreign governments since moving into the White House,” according to the Washington Post.
One of the more interesting aspects of these lawsuits, however, is what we may learn during the course of their litigation. “If a federal judge allows the case to proceed,” the Post report continues, “one of the first steps would be to demand through the discovery process copies of Trump’s personal tax returns to gauge the extent of his foreign business dealings.” Trump’s lawyers will most likely resist that demand all the way to the Supreme Court, the Post concludes, raising the prospect of Trump’s lawyers making a very public case for why they think the President’s tax returns should remain secret. American tax payers can’t wait to hear that.
The lawsuit centers on the “emoluments clause” of the Constitution. Interestingly, most conflicts of interest laws that forbid most other federal workers and elected officials from financial gain while in office don’t apply to the President of the United States. He’s exempt, as is the Vice President, and for mostly good reasons. The one law he’s NOT exempt from, however, is the ’emoluments clause’ in the Constitution, which forbids the President from receiving any gifts or payments of service from foreigners, even through the normal course of business.
Most presidents and elected officials place their business assets and other questionable holdings into a blind trust, and then hand it over to a third party to manage it. This eliminates any practical possibility of a dubious transactions taking place. Trump has chosen not to do this. His lawyers said it wasn’t fair for him to have to dismantle his business empire because he’d worked too hard to build it, and his assets were too complex to sell off in time to take the oath of office.
If the attorneys are able to bring forth undeniable facts, Americans must demand Trump immediate resignation. The American people will not be undermined by foreign nations. We elect Presidents of the United States, not other countries.
