In recent development, China could be providing the Trump family with ‘special business treatment’.

Donald Trump has for years been trying to get his trademarks approved in China, and they never have been until now. That’s right, China approved 9 of Trump’s trademarks. However, the good news is this could weigh against Trump in the new lawsuit filed against him by 200 democratic lawmakers for accepting foreign gifts.

From Left Scoop:

The speed with which these appeals were decided is mind-blowing,” said Matthew Dresden, an intellectual property attorney at Harris Bricken in Seattle. “I have never seen any decisions made that quickly. That suggests special treatment. But that’s just procedural. Substantively, it’s impossible to say whether any of this is unusual.”

On top of approving the rejected trademarks, China has also approved 39 other trademarks since Trump took office. They also approved 14 trademarks for Ivanka Trump’s brand. But it could be difficult to prove favoritism. “Considering the political element, the authorities are definitely not going to admit special treatment, but the possibility cannot be excluded,” You Yunting, a partner at DeBund Law Offices in Shanghai, said. “Even if the Trademark Office helped Trump, it would be very difficult to find the wrongdoing on the surface.”

Alan Garten, the Trump Organization lawyer, is trying hard to defend their business in China, “a haven for trademark infringement,” and claims that Trump’s political career has not influenced the Chinese Trademark Office. In a letter to Democrats who raised conflict-of-interest questions, Garen wrote:

“The Company has not authorized anyone to discuss and is not aware of anyone having discussed Donald J. Trump’s status as either a presidential candidate, President-elect or President of the United States with any representative of the Chinese government in charge of or with the authority to grant trademarks.”

However, the information Garten provided doesn’t match China’s public records. Garten claimed that no trademarks were formally registered since 2015, but China’s Trademark Office’s records show that from February 14th to June 7th of this year, 39 trademarks were officially registered. As well, there is a total of 126 filed applications—Garten claimed there were 117. But, to cover his tracks, he also said that China’s database “is not frequently updated and is widely known to contain a multitude of inaccuracies.”

About 200 congressmen have figured out Trump’s entire reason for being in office — to aid his businesses. We need a president for the people, not one for his own private businesses.
