Former President Obama has returned to the fight against Trump, and he has no intentions to give up on America. Just yesterday Barack Obama ended his silence with a bang that shattered the GOP’s fairy tale regarding their failure of a healthcare plan.
Learn Progress reported:
Yesterday was the 7th anniversary of the signing of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as “Obamacare.” The former president marked the anniversary of his signature law by releasing a statement about the ACA.
First, he discussed the successes of this law. He wrote about how the law has helped many Americans to gain affordable health care.
Obama wrote, “Thanks to this law, more than twenty million Americans have gained the security and peace of mind of health insurance. Thanks to this law, more than ninety percent of Americans are insured – the highest rate in our history.”
Obama talked about other benefits of the law, including allowing young adults to stay on their parent’s health plan until age 26. The ACA also prevents insurance companies from denying coverage to people with pre-existing conditions.
The ACA forces insurers to provide basic health services such ambulance coverage and maternity services. It did all this while slowing down rising health care costs.
“And all the while, since the law passed, the pace of health care inflation has slowed dramatically’” wrote Obama. “Prices are still rising, just as they have every year for decades – but under this law, they’ve been rising at the slowest rate in fifty years.”
Meanwhile, House Republicans are working hard to undo the gains of the ACA. They think their healthcare handout to rich Americans is a better alternative.
Obama had some harsh words for them, however. He acknowledges that the current law isn’t perfect, but points out that the Republican’s replacement is worse for Americans.
“So if Republicans are serious about lowering costs while expanding coverage to those who need it, and if they’re prepared to work with Democrats and objective evaluators in finding solutions that accomplish those goals – that’s something we all should welcome. But we should start from the baseline that any changes will make our healthcare system better, not worse for hardworking Americans,” wrote the former President.
Right now, Trumpcare would cause 24 million Americans to lose their health coverage over the next 10 years. The Trumpcare bill gives big tax breaks to the wealthiest Americans while kicking the poor and elderly out of the healthcare system.
President Obama’s words have reminded the American people how far our county’s healthcare system has come. With Trump as president, the progress we’ve made is in danger.
